Simulated effect of temporary AZT treatment ( = 0.005) started 5 years after the acquisition of HIV infection and lasted 1, 2, or 3 years—curves 1, 2, and 3, respectively. *CD4+ cell observed values are depicted as circles and those of CD8+ lymphocytes as squares. Both simulated and observed values are depicted as a percentage of normal CD4+ lymphocyte numbers (the normal value of CD8+ lymphocytes is thus 66.7%).
