Growth and persistence of Bordetella pertussis in the nasal cavity of mice after low-dose–low-volume nasopharyngeal inoculation over time. C57BL/6 mice were inoculated intranasally with 500 CFU of B. pertussis in 5 µL phosphate-buffered saline for nasopharyngeal inoculations (blue squares) or 500,000 CFU in 50 µL for the pneumonic inoculations (red squares).
