The effect of treatment on the relative frequency of HIV-positive persons (non-AIDS), and persons with AIDS in a steady state population of 10,000. In the untreated population, the duration of AIDS is 2 years, 104 weeks, before the patient dies, whereas in the treated population (*), it is 6 years, 312 weeks. The length of the other stages are identical to those in Figure 1. A) No effect of treatment on the overall transmission of HIV by AIDS patients, but a 1/3 reduction in the weekly rate of t

Figure 3. . A) No effect of treatment on the overall transmission of HIV by AIDS patients, but a 1/3 reduction in the weekly rate of transmission. R00 = R00* = 0, R01 = R01* = R02 = R02* = 0.5, R03 = 0.5, R03* = 0.5. B) Treatment reduces the overall rate of transmission by AIDS patients by a factor of two. R00 = R00* = 0, R01 = R01* = R02=R02* = 0.5, R03 = 0.25, R03* = 0.25
