Press and Media Information

Emerging Infectious Diseases is an open access journal published monthly by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). EID receives more than 2,000 submissions annually from authors from around the world. EID’s peer review process for evaluating submitted articles is independent of CDC oversight.

Accessing Monthly Press Summaries

On the second Tuesday of each month, CDC Media Relations highlights selected articles from the EID journal. To sign-up to receive emails for credentialed journalists, visit the CDC News & Updates subscriptions page and sign up for Emerging Infectious Diseases: Monthly Press Summaries. Contact CDC’s media relations at media@cdc.gov if you have questions.

Clarifying Whose Research You Are Reporting

Most articles that EID publishes represent work from researchers who are not affiliated with CDC. Therefore, it is critical that members of the press clarify who conducted a story:

  • CDC (e.g. “a CDC study published in the EID journal,” “research from CDC that appears in this month’s EID journal”)
  • another institution (e.g. “a study from _________ published by CDC in the EID journal,” “research from ________published in the CDC’s EID journal)

The following disclaimer, which appears at the bottom of every online article and on the inside front cover of each print issue, underscores the importance of correctly reporting the source of the research.

The conclusions, findings, and opinions expressed by authors contributing to this journal do not necessarily reflect the official position of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Public Health Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the authors' affiliated institutions. Use of trade names is for identification only and does not imply endorsement by any of the groups named above.

Including or Embedding URLs for Stories

EID encourages members of the press to include live links to the actual journal article described in your stories. Doing so makes it easier for readers to find the original articles and for authors to track news articles about their research.
